The software then shows you the scan in correct orientation, but your scanning through the film base. Do NOT scan through the film base. Put the film on the scanner emulsion down facing the scanner platen.

When we attach a USB cable to an Epson scanner, the computer will try to recognize it and if it has a suitable driver, it can do an automatic installation and print. One more thing with scanning old photos, it can be emotionally overwhelming, but a scanner cannot help you with that. One of them is buying a good scanner and scanning. But that can be tedious because often there is a bunch of old films and pictures. These scanners have neat little feature. They can recognize when multiple pictures are placed, and separate them. No need to crop them later. Put them together, and they will be scanned as separate pictures.

We are going to take a closer look at two models from the same manufacturer. Epson Perfection V550 and Epson Perfection V600. They can be called old-timers, since they are on the market since 2011 and 2009, respectively.

But they still can do the job and fight off much younger competitors. Not with the design. It is simply outdated. That is why we were reluctant to place it amongst our categories in comparison. Let’s face it, not their stronger side.

Of course, the most important thing about the scanner is the scan quality. Connectivity is there because you would want not to mess with a lot of cables, and easily share your photos. Size and design are important because there is never enough room on the work desk, and a scanner is usually in a visible place. What’s in the box is about useful things you might get with your product.

Epson V550

This bulky boy has a scanning resolution up to6400dpi. It can scan photos, document, films, even negatives. And it can do it fast, thanks to the preheating Ready Scan LED technology. You can make scanned documents into editable text with built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition).

But that is just the tip of the iceberg. A special feature is Digital ICE light. That enables you to scan old films and get amazing quality. It reduces scratches, dust and the damage that time did to those films and negatives. Unfortunately, it only works on them, not on photos. But for them, Easy Photo Fix can be of great help. With one press of a button, pictures can be restored to full glory.

It must be sad that using Digital ICE Light significantly slows down the scanning process.

To make scanning films easier, Epson has provided with film and negative holders. Unfortunately, some rare and older formats of films and negatives are not supported, so you will have to come with some interesting solutions to stop them from curling while scanning.

Epson V600

Scanning resolution is up to 6400dpi. It can scan photos, documents and pretty much everything that V550 can, convert scanned documents into editable text — ABBYY® FineReader® Sprint Plus OCR, but with one major improvement. It has Digital ICE for films and prints, so it can work his magic on photos too. And again, Digital ICE, when used, slows down the scanning process.

As in V550, the users are very satisfied with the quality of photos scan, and especially with the film and negative scans. This model also has the Epson Easy Photo Fix option.

The winner is Epson V600. Although both models share size of scan area (8.5″ x 11.7”), built-in transparency unit, optical resolution, hardware resolution, and software performance-boosting features, the win goes to Epson V6oo because it has Digital ICE for films and prints, while Epson V550 can enhance only films in that way.

No wireless connection of any kind here. Connects to a computer via Hi-Speed USB 2.0. The upside is that it has shortcuts to help you to share your scans on Facebook, Picasa, and popular cloud services.

Epson V600

Since this is an older model, there are no surprises here. Standard Hi-Speed USB 2.0 cable is used to connect to a computer, no wireless connection is possible. It does have shortcuts for the scan to email and PDF.

Both models have the same problem – Mac OS. Installation for the scanners is not on the disc, you will have to download it, and then- with the words of many users- wish you hadn’t. Many, sometimes strange, problems can really annoy you. A common reason for frustration is that you cannot start to scan something and then open another app on your computer. The scanning program will most likely go to sleep unless it is always up front and you are moving the mouse.

Problems with Windows 10 were also reported, but new software is now available on the Epson web site.

The winner is- none. Both equally good, and bad.

Let’s not talk about the design. It is just– simple, and bulky.

Epson V550 is a little bit larger and heavier.

Epson V550 is 20% cheaper than Epson V600. The scanning quality is the same, so are the many other features, software etc. The only major difference is that V6oo has Digital ICE for films and prints, and the Epson V550 has Digital ICE Light just for films. If getting the best quality out of both old and damaged photos and films is important to you, then the difference in price is not. If you are satisfied with (just) good quality in old photos, then you would get nothing extra out of paying more money.

Final Recount

The winner is difficult to determine. Let’s just say that we give a slight advantage to Epson V600 because you never know if you are going to be sorry someday because scratches cover the most important parts of that old family photo.

Maybe it doesn’t sound too important, but when it comes to family memories maybe it is.
